Soundtrack to my life

Music has the power to transport us to the past, and bring back memories, some good and some bad. I grew up with the songs of Madonna, Bon Jovi, Meatloaf, Abba and Fleetwood Mac, and so it is no surprise the songs of these artists can be used to track the journey of my life.

Early Memories.

Chiquitita by Abba, always brings back memories of Saturday afternoons spent with my aunt and Dad. After my parents divorced, every Saturday I was collected by my Dad and taken to my grandparents farm. We, my aunt and I, would walk the dogs around the fields, feed the rabbit and guinea pig, collect eggs from the hen house and run from Charlie the Goose – that thing hated me!

In the winter when it was too cold for these activities, we would spend the afternoon, sitting in front of the open coal fire, painting fingernails, and listening to various Abba albums. To this day I love Abba’s music, Fernando, Winner Takes It All, Take A Chance On Me, Super Trooper and of course Thank You for The Music, all have special meaning to me. Occasionally my Dad would stand me on his feet and we would dance. Of course my memory has likely altered and polished these memories, especially now my Dad has passed away, but these moments have become my favorite memories of him, and Chiquitita always brings this memory to mind. I have of course been to see Mamma Mia on stage twice and have the movies, because any opportunity to sing along to Abba has to be taken.

Teen Power.

Papa Don’t Preach and Express Yourself were my Madonna anthems when I reached High School. The first because I desperately wished I could tell my stepfather to sod off and let me live my life, and the second because I desperately wanted to be in a relationship with a man like this. I spent my teenage years biting my tongue, never speaking my mind and by the time I left home I was a shadow, or a ghost. I had no substance or power. Madonna seemed to be a very strong woman and a wished I could be more like that. Looking back at the video for Express Yourself I see BDSM influences which brings me to the video I want to share with you here. Human Nature…

Divorce.

Divorcing my first husband I was ‘Moving on Up’ with M People. It was my anthem, new beginnings and new friends came into my life. For the first time, I went out to nightclubs and danced to songs like Whigfield’s Saturday Night, Shaggy’s Boombastic and Culture Beat’s Mr Vain. I made out on the dance floor and enjoyed the attention being paid to me by many young gentlemen. It was the relationship with a woman, that got me through this difficult time, and she made me get in touch with my silly side.

Finding Myself – Bon Jovi.

I spent many evenings dancing around my living room to Bon Jovi, with my friend, convinced we were Born to be his Baby. While watching the music video chanel we desperately wanted to Lay our Hands on Him, and we would point at each other declaring how we Gave Love a Bad Name. We danced and sang, Always while we were Living on a Prayer. During those years we were bonded, Blood on Blood, and we saw each other 5 days a week without fail. Willing to go down in a Blaze of Glory for each other, our babies would play and nap while we danced around having as much fun as we could. Of course nothing lasts forever, and when I moved away our friendship ended but without our friendship I would have been a very lonely single mum. The other song which defined this period of my life is a song by Meredith Brooks, Bitch.

Falling in Love – Meatloaf.

By now I am almost 21 and this is when Mr H came into my life. I found myself listening to the music of The Monkeys, Guns and Roses, and Meatloaf when we were together. Meatloaf is one of Mr H favorite artists, and also one of my Dad’s. When we met he had recently released the Album ‘Welcome to the Neighbourhood’ and the epic I would do anything for love was once again being played on the music channels as part of the promotion. . We, Mr H and I, made out and had sex to ‘Bat Out of Hell’, Bat Out of Hell II’ and ‘Welcome to The Neighbourhood’ so they have a special place in my memories. I asked Mr H if he thought we had a song and he said Modern Girl always reminds him of me so that is the song I am sharing here.

First Dance – Aerosmith.

When we got married the song I planned for our First Dance was When you say nothing at all by Ronan Keating, but we went to a wedding a few weeks before ours and this was their first dance. I didn’t want to be seen to copy and so we moved it to the second dance, and we danced our first dance as husband and wife to I don’t wanna miss a thing. We didn’t take dance lessons, and do a waltz or some other formal dance, as has become so popular, we just didn’t really care that much, we stood in the middle of the dance floor (I was barefoot having ditched my shoes the minutes the photos were taken) and swayed. The video I have picked to add to this playlist today is Ronan Keating’s because this is how I felt about our relationship. It was the reason I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, because he seemed to know me even when I was silent.

Our Continued Love Affair – Bon Jovi.

To this day Bon Jovi plays a huge part in our sex playlist. Bed of Roses, In These Arms and Thank You for Loving Me are guaranteed to help get me in the mood and are nice to listen to when I am coming down afterwards too. I thought picking just one Bon Jovi song to showcase would be difficult but on Sunday after I had been flogged, brought to climax and was laid under the blanket, Mr H at my side, my mind drifting this song came on.

Uplifting tunes.

I have a playlist that is 48 hours long, and it contains a mix of music from the 70’s on. Summer Sunshine and Leave Me Breathless by The Corrs, are always on my playlists and never fail to lift my mood. This Kiss and The Way you Love Me by Faith Hill make me think of Mr H and are playful tunes at the same time. Fleetwood Mac is the other band that I bring forward from my childhood. Stevie Nicks has a distinctive voice and Rhiannon, Everywhere, Seven Wonders, and Dreams are my favourites songs from them. I think I have a wide range of musical likes, but as a rule they are songs which are uplifting or empowering in some way.

Into the Future – Shania Twain.

Shania Twain’s Forever and For Always is the song that I hope describes my relationship with Mr H, because I certainly plan to keep him forever and for always.
