On Everyday Life

Fictional Books and Me

I love to read fiction. As a teenager I would escape into a book and hide away from my life. When I read a book that really grabs my attention, the world melts away, I become so absorbed in the story that I have absolutely no idea what is going on around me, I do not hear people speaking and I completely lose track of time. For study purposes this is extremely useful but it has been quite some time since I found a book that grabbed my attention so completely. In fact the last book to do so was probably the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.

All Souls Trilogy, Deborah Harkness.

The first book in the trilogy A Discovery of Witches, (2011), has very recently been made into a short TV drama. It wasn’t a bad representation of the book, but as with most TV adaptations they always loose a little something on the big screen. The second book Shadow of Night, (2012) continues the story, and it concludes with The Book of Life, (2014).

Too posh to read.

I must admit to not reading much now. I can’t remember reading anything since this, as I moved to audio books. Too posh to read, is how I laughingly refer to my preference for audio books but I confess that when I try to read I fall asleep. My post for Food For Thought A whole Library talked about some of the other books I have read, and my favorites from the different stages of my life.

My recommendation.

I first read the All Souls Trilogy after I had my hysterectomy in 2015, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story weaves supernatural characters, witches, vampires and daemons, with a love story, a mystery, and a time travelling adventure. From the moment I started to read A Discovery of Witches I was invested in the adventure, in the love story between Diana and Matthew, and her magical awakening. If you like stories about magic, or history I recommend you give these a whirl.
