Self Employment

Over the last few years I have toyed with the idea of self employment, mainly because I find my health so unpredictable that attending work regularly becomes difficult.  The problem being, when you are self employed you have to work or you do not earn.

Less Pressure?

But self employment could ultimately mean less pressure.  Granted, I would have deadlines, but, I can type my pretty arse off in my own time.  Especially when I can take my time to do it.  If I do not have to get up and go out, when I can do an hour and take a break and go back to it.  I could probably work more effectively.

The main problem is the risk involved when you are starting out.  You need to build a client base or you need someone who is referring clients to you.

Still self employment is something I consider.

I have not made it into work the last 2 days, my pain following the PIP Assessment has been too much.  This makes me unreliable as an employee, no matter how understanding the employer.  After all they have a business to run.  For now, I am resting.  After struggling for 3 days not to take the strong painkillers I have given in again.  I am so fed up of living life dependent on them to be comfortable – not even pain free – just comfortable.

  1. Would there be a way of being self employed and earning money from working from home? It might be worth exploring. I had some project work while recovering from surgery and it worked well.

  2. I’m so sorry about the setback. Are there any opportunities that you could still keep your current profession and work from home? I currently work from home for a corporation and I’m a regular full-time employee. It does have it’s ups and down too, but I know it would save you a lot of time and physical pain. Just an idea. I hope you feel a little better with rest. ❤️

  3. I think self employment is ideal in so many ways but would be scary starting out. It would be the only way I could go back to working. I would need to work at my own pace and be able to take frequent breaks. I know without a doubt that if I tried a traditional job I would end up fired for missing too much time. I would love to be well enough to make a full time living from self employment though. Being on disability is what I need right now. But it is a blow to my self esteem. I would love to make it on my own. It’s a daydream of mine to be able to make a living copywriting and blogging.

  4. When I read your post, I just want to come over and give you a hug. There is pain, and then there is living with pain. I’m so sorry that you’re finding yourself confronted with the choices you are thinking about. Working for yourself can be great, but when it’s because going to work becomes untenable, it’s not really a choice. I wished there was something we could do to help you. What ever you decide, we’re here to support you. xoxoxo

  5. Would your current employer facilitate you working from home? S/employment has it’s advantages, but the one I struggle with is the lack of interaction with other people……to start s/employment, you could do the odd bit of work as well as your employment – it would likely snowball by word of mouth from there.
